Planning a getaway? Sussex Beds share their sleep tips for jet setters sleeping on the move . . .
If you’re flying long-haul – and especially if it’s a night flight – you’ll no doubt be hoping to get some sleep during the journey so that you arrive refreshed and ready to start your break. But all too often sleep proves impossible. If you’re lucky enough to travel first-class or business class, your seat will recline into a horizontal position. But most of us face the challenge of trying to drift off in a narrow upright chair while dreaming longingly of our comfy mattresses back home.
So how can we maximise our chances of sleeping during a flight?
Follow our top tips and you could soon be snoozing until the plane touches down!
Most airlines now allow you to choose your seat ahead of the flight. So make a note in your diary and log in as soon as the online check-in/seat booking facility opens. Sitting by the window means you’re least likely to be disturbed, and you have somewhere to lean. Plus you have control of the window blind. Result!
These are lightweight and should fit easily into your hand luggage.
Tempting as it may be to down a glass of wine or three, it’s not the best way to guarantee restful sleep. Chances are you’ll doze off immediately, only to wake after an hour with a sandpaper-dry mouth, a sore head and a desperate urge to visit the loo. Caffeine is a stimulant that’s dehydrating too, so it’s also advisable to avoid tea or coffee. Herbal teas or water aren’t very exciting, but if you’re keen to sleep, they’re definitely the safest choices.
Loose layers are best so that you can adjust your outfit depending on the temperature. The cabin can often feel very warm at the start of a journey, but temperatures drop as higher altitudes are reached. Pack warm socks and ask for a blanket if you’re cold – most airlines are happy to provide them. And don’t forget your earplugs and an eye mask – which are the most effective way of saying ‘Do not disturb’.
To avoid feeling frustrated or panicky, accept that you’re unlikely to get more than three to four hours of sleep and that it will probably be interrupted. Managing your expectations this way will help you to feel more relaxed, and in turn, your forty winks might even become a six-hour slumber!
